Artificial Turf

A lawn that stays green through a dry summer

Synthetic LawnsPetaluma, CA · Marin, Sonoma & Napa

Turf lives or dies on the base under it, and that is the part a cheap install skips. Laid straight onto old lawn or unconsolidated soil it will hold puddles, ripple where people walk, and pull away from its edges inside two seasons. We excavate to depth, lay and compact a crushed base in lifts, set the falls so water actually leaves the area, fix a proper edge, then seam the turf with the pile running one way and infill it so it stands up instead of matting flat. Done that way it takes dogs, kids, shade under a deck, and a whole Sonoma summer without water. It is the right answer for side yards that never grow grass, small back gardens that get hammered, and anywhere a lawn is more trouble than it is worth — and the wrong answer for a large open garden that would be better planted.

Our Process

1

Measure and Spec

Area, access, drainage, and use — a dog run and a front lawn are not the same specification.

2

Excavate and Base

Old surface out, crushed base in and compacted in lifts. This is the step that decides how the lawn looks in five years.

3

Lay and Seam

Turf cut to the shape, seamed with the pile running one way, and fixed to a firm edge all round.

4

Infill and Finish

Infill brushed in, the pile lifted, and the edges dressed back into the beds or hardscape.
